Girls on the Run is a fun after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare young girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. During the after-school sessions, girls train for a 5k run/walk event with workouts that teach healthy decision making and valuable life skills. The event parners with the GOTR chapter of Sonoma County. Many of the volunteers for this event are girls and their mentors from GOTR. The event also benefits the track and cross country programs at Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, thanks to the many athletes who volunteer at the race. Thanks also to the efforts of the owners and staff at Heart & Sole in Santa Rosa, some of who coach and train at the high school, or offer training groups for adults for the half marathon.
